Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM's)

Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) contribute to the properties of hardened concrete through hydraulic or pozzolanic activity.

Fly ash is an SCM that is a by-product of coal fired power plants. For each tonne of fly ash used in place of pure Portland Cement, approximately 0.882 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are avoided.

When properly proportioned, fly ash in concrete can:

  • Improve resistance to sulphate attack
  • Improve resistance to Alkali Aggregate Reactivity (AAR)
  • Decrease permeability
  • Reduce shrinkage and thermal cracking
  • Lower heat of hydration over straight cement
  • Improve workability
  • Improve pumpability
  • Increase 56-day strength
  • Lower costs

Lehigh Cement continues to invest to develop fly ash storage facilities, distribution networks and rail capacity to ensure an environmentally sustainable and reliable supply of fly ash to our customers.

*Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) are available in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Washington (sources vary).
